Remote-ink notarization only: States in This Tier
Remote-ink notarization only
Some states authorize a notarization method called remote-ink notarization, which falls between traditional in-person notarization and full remote online notarization. In this process, the notary and signer conduct an audiovisual session to verify identity and witness the signing, but the signer must then mail a physically signed document to the notary rather than using a digital signature. Connecticut currently permits remote-ink notarization for certain documents. This approach allows parts of the USPS Form 1583 application process to occur remotely while maintaining a requirement for a wet-ink signature on the final document.
For someone opening a virtual mailbox, this tier means the notarization can begin online but will require you to receive and return physical paperwork by mail. The exact procedures and which documents qualify vary significantly by state statute. Before proceeding with remote-ink notarization for Form 1583 in any state, you should verify the current rules on your state's official government website, as regulations change and details differ by jurisdiction.
